I've been slacking on my pizza posts! I've been making it, but my pictures don't look all that appetizing so I'm not so motivated to post. But this one was so new and different, that I had to post it! It was only 100 degrees out, but I was craving pizza. I really wanted to turn on my oven to 500 degrees. Good food is worth sweating.
As usual, I sent Skinny Fat Kid on a hunt for whole wheat dough. Apparently no one would give it up this night. He went to the last place that was on his way from the train to our apartment. They wouldn't give it to him. He offered to pay for a pizza just to get the dough. I don't understand why they won't give it up? Is it because they're dough is that great and they don't want someone passing it off as their own?
Adapted from Cookin' Lean Like Paula Deen
Ingredients:
- Large whole wheat pizza dough
- 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (I should have made my own but used Stubb's Honey Pecan and a dash of hot sauce)
- 1 green apple, thinly sliced
- 3/4 cup chopped or shredded cooked chicken breast
- 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded smoked gouda cheese
- Preheat oven to 475 degrees.
- Roll out dough onto baking sheet or pizza stone. Cover dough with BBQ sauce. Add layers of apple and red onion, followed by chicken and cheese.
- Bake for about 10 minutes or until crust is cooked and cheese is bubbly.

Ooh apples on pizza. I like it!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of putting apples on pizza, what an interesting combination! I do love apples...
ReplyDeleteI really should just break the mold for the MR. and make some weird pizzas on the off chance he will like them in the end. But he likes to stick to the norm so I dunno.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried to make your own pizza dough? It's really not that complicated. Might be worth it since people don't seem to want to give up their dough. I have never gone and bought dough from anywhere but the rare grocery store that sells it. Probably because I don't have the guts to, so I just make it instead.
One of my favorite ways to make a white pizza (no tom. sauce) is with apple butter as a base.. sooooo good with some garlic and all kinds of cheese. Ugh, now I want pizza.

I have made my own dough before. I am impatient and can't wait for my dough to rise most of the time. And I find it to be a bit more difficult to work with than the dough from the pizza place.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Sauerkraut, apples, and onions you could keep the tomato base and use sliced kielbasa instead of pepperoni along with some sausage and the regular cheese or what ever kind you wanted. Green olives and green and/or yellow peppers could also be options.
